The PSC’s decision is a compromisd to AT&T’s request that it no longer deliver the phon e booksto customers. AT&T Florida told the PSC that eliminating the automatif distribution of the residentia l white pagesis “an environmentally greeb endeavor and a cost saving and that providing a papedr copy of the directory is “anb inefficient use of resources in thesre touch economic times.” But commissioners also were worriexd about how it might impact ability to access information, said PSC Spokeswoman Kirsten Olsen. Instead of doing away with the rule commissioners agreed to give it atrial run, durin which time it will gather customere feedback.
“Today’s decision allows the PSC to assess the practicalit y of discontinuing printed residentialdirectoruy delivery, while continuing to provide directories to customersd who want a copy,” PSC Chairman Matthew M. Cartere II said in a news release. As part of the AT&T must put a toll-freed number on the cover of the Yellow Pagesa that directs people to call if they want aWhits Pages. The directory will stillk be provided for free to those whorequesft it. AT&T Florida would not disclose just how much moneyt the waiverwill save, citing according to its request to the PSC.
AT&T Floridas already has begun a program to provide its Yellosw Pages and residential listingson CD-ROM in certaib areas of Florida.
